March 27, 2011Men’s Hair competition Hair on Fire
March 22, 2011It is a rainy, cloudy day and I decided this is the perfect time to update my blog. I recently entered a contest, Junior Style Stars, where stylists get to compete among other student stylists with the chance to win prizes. One of the categories I’d entered was the Men’s Competition. After getting much slack about how we’re in a recession and I needed to save all my coins I decided to take the risk and enter anyway. I loved the idea of getting a chance to showcase my talents and break away from my normal clients’ requests.
My client, the mannequin, would allow me to do any design I wanted. There would be no complaints, tears, or resistance to any of my visions. The first thought that popped into my head was what kind of symbols do men typically wear. SKULLS!! I started googling skulls and saw some pics with skulls on fire. That was it, my inspiration, I was going to do hair on fire with the skull as my focal point.
It took me weeks to figure out how to get the skull the right size and to match it on both sides. I was, after all, a student stylist and still learning the physics of hair:) I started out with a baby skull that looked like a little circle and then realized I had to go big or go home. The flames took a while to figure out how to style and color. I ended up with this being my final results.

I am so grateful that I entered the contest. It allowed me to come out my comfort zone and risk losing all my mannequins hair to achieve the results I wanted. I read the rules of the contest and followed them to a tee. It was an open theme and the participants did not have any real direction from the judges as to the criteria they would be looking for. They finally did their first rounds of cut this week. I did not make it to the second round. I noticed that the judges were looking for something more conservative. I also looked at some youtube videos about the men’s competition for junior style stars.
I had made a huge error based on videos I came across. I focused on color while keeping the cut simple and non distracting when I needed to do the opposite. In the rules it said at least of 1/2 inch of hair needed to be cut. I assumed it was a competition for men’s overall hair styles, but that was not the case. If they would have titled it Men’s Cutting Competition I would have understood things better. So I hope the following year competitors out there read this my blog in time or Junior Styles establishes a more clear direction of what they are looking for
I went back and looked at their past bridal winners and you do not see avant garde or fantasy hair winners. I signed up for the 500bridal site to see their past winners. For those thinking about entering this contest you can take my recommendation at face value. I am not a judge so… I think this contest wants you to do a style you would give to your client but it has to be creative and not outlandish. Do not go overboard, it will save you lots of time from focusing on the wrong things. This was their first year doing the Men’s Competition so they might be more organized and have a theme for next year hopefully!
