For the past two months, I decided to challenge myself to stop practicing damaging techniques on my hair. My goal was to put down the comb and flat iron for as long as possible. During this period I began to suffer from what I like to call “I need my hair straight withdrawal symptoms.”
The first step of this new project was to find a effective way to detangle my hair without using my beloved wide tooth comb. My fingers slowly began to loosen and remove the knots in my hair. I only detangled the hair strands when taking showers. I noticed right away the difference between combing with hands versus using man made devices. Using your hands take a whole lot longer and the detangling time increases each time you wash.
As far as going without heat, it was a piece of cake. I was fine with styling my hair every 2 weeks without having to worry about dry combing. Two months into the project I had enough of detangling with my hands. I was also beginning to become tired of having to take long, cold showers.
Flat ironing my hair gave me the opportunity not only to see the new growth of my hair but to trim my ends as well. I was delighted to see how my efforts paid off. When the project was completed, I was left with thick, luscious hair.
