Attempting to Braid

October 15, 2008

This past week I decided I would try to braid my hair again. Normally I would braid two cornrows, give up, and call it a day.  However, something told me to keep pushing forward this time around.  I thought to myself, “If Calais started braiding her locks at the age of eleven surely  I can do it too!  Maybe I am making braiding harder than what it needs to be.”

I parted my hair in half to make it easier on my hands. I began braiding my hair starting at the halfway point to the nape and then from the front of my head to the halfway point.  I also used light gel to make my braids last longer.

Everything was going well until I realized why braiding is not meant for everyone.  Arthritis forced her way on the scene  and made it apparent she was not too happy with me.  Cracking, cramping, and getting stuck from time to time my fingers had a mind of their own.  Next thing you know two days had past and I still had two more braids to go.

When I finally finished it looked as if my braids were a week old:(  I was not able to establish a good grip and as a result my hair was frizzy.  I still have a lot to learn and I need to practice, practice, and practice.

I sent my photo to Ms. Braid Expert, Calais.  She started singing “Locked Up,” and I told her how proud I was for finally finishing.  Calais suggested that I do creative designs rather than braiding straight back. What are your thoughts?
